Fans clean up after world cup victories

With the 2018 World Cup well underway in Russia, Japan celebrated their shock victory 2-1 victory over Columbia on 19 June by cleaning up the stadium.

Following the shock victory – the first time Japan’s national team has beaten a South American team at a World Cup – you might expect most fans to leave behind even more rubbish than usual following jubilant celebrations. However this was not the case for Japanese fans, who were spotted meticulously picking up rubbish from between the seats.

The ‘Samurai Blue’ fans are well known for their manners. Cleanliness is a habit drilled into Japanese people from an early age. Many fans even brought with them plastic bin bags in order to clean up after themselves, and many videos have been shared on social media of the fans clearing the stands, with many even being praised by disappointed Columbia supporters.

It wasn’t just the Samurai Blues who impressed either: many fans of Senegal, who also secured a surprise victory by beating Poland 2-1, were spotted sweeping through the stands collecting rubbish and assembling it into piles.

It remains to be seen whether or not these displays of excellent sportsmanship and responsibility will spread to other nations throughout the tournament in Russia.
